Moving Home with Pets: Pack an Essentials Kit First

The removal van is loaded, the kettle has disappeared into a box and the cat carrier is behind a stack marked kitchen. Moving home with pets becomes easier to organise when the supplies needed today travel separately from the things you can unpack next week.

Build a clearly labelled essentials kit and assign one person to keep it accessible. Then plan the pet's location at each stage: packing, loading, travel and arrival.

Plan the move around each pet

Decide who will supervise your pets while doors are open and furniture is moving. Depending on the individual animal and arrangements available, a familiar carer away from the work or a secure, prepared room may be appropriate.

For cats staying at home during the move, Cats Protection recommends preparing a quiet room at both properties, supplying familiar essentials and making sure removal staff know not to open the door. Introduce the current home's room ahead of moving day.

Avoid assuming that pets who share a house should share a small temporary room. Plan separate suitable spaces where needed.

Pack supplies for immediate use

Keep the usual food, measuring equipment, bowls, drinking water, waste supplies and any prescribed medication accessible. Retain food packaging and medication labels so instructions and identifying details stay with the products.

Pack suitable familiar bedding, the correct walking equipment and an appropriate secure carrier for animals that need one. Include cleaning supplies for ordinary spills, keeping them separate from food and medication.

Choose a kit you can lift and find quickly. Put the pet's name and the responsible person's contact details on it if several people are helping.

Check transport before loading day

Inspect carriers, closures and travel equipment while there is time to address problems. Confirm how each item must be secured in the vehicle using the product and vehicle instructions.

Keep the passenger area suitable for your pet and do not pack possessions where they could fall onto a carrier or block ventilation. Plan necessary stops and have supplies available without unloading the whole vehicle.

Our cat travel checklist and dog day-trip checklist can help identify everyday items, although a house move needs its own supervision and arrival arrangements.

Set up the arrival space before releasing pets

Check doors, windows, garden access and any gaps left by furniture removal. Put cleaning products, tools and loose packaging out of reach. Do not assume the new property is secure because the previous home was.

For a cat, start with the prepared room and familiar resources, then introduce more indoor space gradually as they settle. Keep outside access closed during the settling period and consult species-specific guidance before planning outdoor access.

For a dog, check the walking equipment before necessary outdoor breaks and supervise exploration. Keep the first routine simple enough to manage while other people continue unpacking.

Keep records and care contacts current

Arrange access to your pet's veterinary history and identify a local practice and emergency care contact. Update microchip contact details with the relevant database, along with insurance and other care records as applicable.

Keep normal meal instructions visible so helpers do not accidentally duplicate a feed. Assign responsibility for doors and pet checks rather than assuming someone else is watching.

Unpack familiar supplies before buying replacements

Try the existing bed, bowls and favourite suitable toys in the new layout before deciding what is missing. The new home may need a different arrangement more than a complete set of new accessories.
