How to Wash a Dog or Cat Bed Without Damaging It
Share
The favourite bed has collected fur, crumbs and the unmistakable evidence of a wet walk. Before putting the whole thing into the washing machine, check how it is constructed. A removable cover may be washable even when the cushion inside requires a different method.
A practical pet bed cleaning routine starts with the care label and ends with a completely dry, correctly reassembled bed. Choosing the strongest wash setting is no substitute for following the instructions for the actual materials.
Separate the cover from the filling
Read the label before unzipping anything. Identify which parts can be removed, which can be washed and whether any inserts must stay dry. Heated beds and beds with electrical components require their own specific instructions; do not treat them like ordinary cushions.
Photograph the arrangement of removable inserts if putting them back could be confusing. Check that zips, seams and the underside are intact. Loose filling or a broken fastener needs attention before the bed goes back to your pet.
If the label is missing, ask the manufacturer for guidance. A material name alone does not tell you how the assembled bed will respond to soaking, agitation or heat.
Remove loose hair and debris first
Move your pet to another comfortable resting place. Lift away loose debris and use an appropriate vacuum attachment or fabric-safe hair remover on the surfaces the care instructions permit.
Check folds and seams rather than cleaning only the visible middle. Empty any removable cover before washing it. This also gives you a chance to find a forgotten toy or an object that should never have been in the bed.

Follow the permitted washing method
Use the washing temperature, cycle and cleaning product recommended for the bedding. Check the washing machine's capacity too: an oversized cushion may fit through the door while still exceeding what the machine can handle properly.
Avoid adding fragrance, disinfectant or stain treatment simply because it is already in the cupboard. Confirm suitability for the material and intended pet use. Never mix cleaning products.
For hand-clean-only items, follow the specified method without soaking parts that must remain dry. If contamination follows an illness, ask your veterinary team for an appropriate cleaning plan rather than assuming an ordinary wash provides disinfection.
Dry the inside as well as the outside
Follow the drying label and allow enough time for thick sections, seams and inserts. A cover that feels dry does not establish that the filling underneath is ready.
Reassemble only when the permitted washed components are fully dry. Check that inserts sit correctly, fastenings close and the base lies flat. Keep the bed out of use if there is damaged filling, a persistent damp interior or an unresolved care problem.
Build a routine around actual use
Check bedding regularly and respond to visible dirt, spills and odour. Cleaning frequency depends on the pet, the bed and how it is used; a universal weekly washing rule will not suit every material or household.
A spare suitable resting place makes laundry day easier. Keep a familiar option available while the main bed dries, then return the clean bed to a position your pet already chooses.
