How to Measure a Dog for a Harness: A Buying Guide

Walks & Travels with Your Dog — Part 3 of 5
To measure a dog for a harness, follow the chosen product’s measurement guide, record the figures and compare them with that exact model’s size chart. Chest girth is a common starting point, but an S, M or L label alone does not establish fit.
Part three of Walks & Travels with Your Dog is a buying workflow: measure first, confirm the chart, then check the real harness on the dog before the first walk.
Prepare the measurements
Use a flexible tailor’s tape while your dog is comfortable standing naturally. If handling or the tape worries them, pause and introduce it gradually rather than holding them tightly to finish.
Ruffwear’s measuring guide places chest girth around the widest part of the ribcage, usually just behind the front legs. It also describes using a length of string and measuring that afterwards. Follow the measuring location shown by the product you are actually considering.
- Read the selected harness’s measuring instructions.
- Locate the chest measurement point shown.
- Wrap the tape without twisting or pulling it tight.
- Record the figure and unit clearly.
- Repeat to check consistency and take any additional measurements requested.
Some designs also need neck or other measurements. Do not substitute a collar measurement if the harness instructions show a different point.
Use the chart for the exact model
Compare your figures with the chart for the selected harness. A chart from another brand, or another model from the same brand, may not apply. Ruffwear specifically notes that between-size recommendations depend on the design.
If measurements sit between sizes or different measurements suggest different options, ask the seller for guidance. Do not automatically size up or down based on a general internet rule.
| Record | What to include |
|---|---|
| Dog’s measurements | Chest and any additional points the model requires |
| Units | Centimetres or inches, clearly labelled |
| Exact product | Model, style and selected variant |
| Chart checked | The chart attached to that model |
| Questions | Between sizes, strap range or intended use |
Do not buy by breed or weight alone
Dogs of similar weight can have different proportions. Product photos show how an item looks on the pictured dog; they do not replace measurements for yours.
Think about how the harness is put on as well. If your dog is uncomfortable with a head opening, the introduction process matters. Dogs Trust’s harness guide recommends teaching comfort with the equipment; wearing it is a skill to build, not something to force.
Checking Pawvelin’s harness options
Pawvelin’s Adjustable Dog Harness & Bungee Leash listing includes adjustable Oxford-cloth harnesses in Black or Khaki and separate bungee leash options.
Choose a harness variant if you need the harness. A leash-only selection is a different item, and the two are not supplied as a set. Compare your measurements with the size information for the selected harness, and contact Pawvelin before ordering if you need help checking fit.

Inspect straps, buckles, stitching and clips before walking. Adjust according to the supplied instructions. A product’s top handle does not establish suitability for lifting a dog, and a walking harness should not be assumed suitable as a car restraint.
Check the fit before the first route
Introduce and adjust the harness in a quiet setting. Observe ordinary standing and walking, following the maker’s fit guidance. Look for shifting, rubbing or restriction and seek help if you are unsure.
Do not try to solve poor fit by repeatedly tightening everything. If the shape or adjustment range does not suit the dog, another design may be needed. Allow time for the dog to become comfortable before adding the distractions of an outing.
Recheck fit when circumstances change, including growth or a different coat condition. Keep a record so a future purchase starts with current measurements rather than an old size label.
Harness measurement FAQs
Can I use the same size as another brand?
No size label is universal. Compare the current dog measurements with the exact model’s chart.
What if I only know the dog’s weight?
Take the measurements requested by the seller. Weight may be part of the product guidance, but it does not replace shape and strap measurements.
Will a harness stop pulling?
It does not guarantee that. Comfortable equipment and reward-based walking practice have different roles.
Measure before adding to the cart
Record the measurements, confirm the selected item and read the fit guidance. The leash comparison and travel-preparation guides in this series will help you plan how the equipment will be used.
