How to Clean and Store Pet Grooming Brushes

Everyday Pet Grooming — Part 5 of 5
Care for a grooming brush in four separate steps: clear collected hair, inspect the tool, clean it as directed and let it dry before storage. For rechargeable brushes, follow the electrical and charging instructions as well.
This final part of Everyday Pet Grooming brings the routine back to the equipment. A hair-release button may simplify one step, but it does not identify which parts can be washed or which cleaning products are suitable.
Identify the tool before cleaning
Keep the model’s instructions or product information accessible. Look at its materials, moving parts, any water reservoir and charging connection. Do not treat a manual metal comb, a slicker and an electrical mist brush as identical items.
| Tool | First care question |
|---|---|
| Manual comb or brush | Which cleaning method suits its materials and construction? |
| Self-cleaning slicker | How does the release mechanism work, and how is the face cleaned? |
| Rechargeable mist brush | Which parts can be cleaned with moisture, and how is the port kept dry? |
| Included fabric lint tool | What does its own surface-care guidance permit? |
If the instructions are missing or unclear, ask before choosing a soaking method, solvent or disinfectant. “Reusable” and “self-cleaning” do not establish dishwasher suitability.
Step 1: Clear collected fur
Remove loose hair according to the tool’s directions. Do this regularly rather than letting a thick layer obscure the working face. Put collected fur in a bin and clear the immediate work area.
For Pawvelin’s Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush, press the button as directed and lift off the hair. Do not assume that a similar-looking button on another tool has the same function.
Step 2: Inspect before the next use
Look for damaged or bent pins, loose pieces, a cracked body, or a mechanism that no longer operates as directed. Set a questionable item aside instead of returning it to the ready-to-use storage.
Keep the inspection separate from judging appearance. A brush can look free of fur while still having a damaged pin or closure. Do not test suspect equipment on your pet to find out whether it still feels acceptable.
Step 3: Clean according to the model
Pawvelin’s slicker directions call for clearing the hair, wiping the brush clean and letting it dry before storing. Follow the supplied care instructions for the actual unit.
The Avocado Steam Brush has a water reservoir and USB charging, so its care also needs to account for those features. Clear the brush face as directed and keep the charging port dry.

A reservoir intended to hold water does not mean the whole brush can be immersed. Do not use a cleaning recipe for a plain comb on an electrical brush without confirming it is permitted.
Step 4: Dry and organise storage
Allow the cleaned parts to dry as directed before closing them into storage. Keep grooming tools away from pet access, loose cables and household cleaning chemicals.
Use a simple ready/needs-care arrangement. For example, put a cleaned and inspected tool in its usual place and keep an item awaiting instructions or repair separately. This helps another person avoid picking it up for the next session.
Charging a mist brush
Follow the supplied charging instructions and use the specified connection and equipment. Disconnect before grooming. Keep the charging area dry and let parts dry fully before charging or storing.
On Pawvelin’s avocado brush, the control activates mist. It is not a hair-ejection button. The companion mist-brush guide explains its functions and the different selected sets.
Keep household cleaning accessories separate
Some sets include an additional fabric lint tool. That accessory has a different purpose from the pet brush. Store and use each item according to its own instructions rather than assuming every piece in a grooming set is for direct use on the animal.
Our pet hair removal guide covers fabric cleanup. After grooming, use a suitable method for the floor or furniture without disturbing a pet that has gone to rest.
Brush care FAQs
Does self-cleaning mean washing is automatic?
No. On Pawvelin’s slicker, the button helps release hair. You still clear the fur and follow its cleaning directions.
Can every brush be soaked?
No. Confirm the method for the materials and design, especially for rechargeable tools.
Can I put a damp tool straight into a closed box?
Let it dry as instructed before storage. Keep questionable or unfinished items out of the ready-to-use group.
Finish with a ready kit
Clear, inspect, clean, dry and store. That small reset makes the next grooming session easier to prepare, while the other guides in this series help with coat choice, technique and introductions.
